Troubleshooting
New images aren't converted
Check that the folder's switch is on and that All Folders isn't paused (the pause button in the window's toolbar or the menu bar). Images in folders inside it are only converted with Include subfolders turned on, under the folder's … menu → Options.
The images that were already in the folder weren't converted
When you add a folder, the app offers to convert the images already in it. If you dismissed that, choose Convert Again from the folder's … menu.
A folder says “Can't find this folder”
It was moved, renamed or deleted, or the app lost access, for example on an external drive that isn't connected. Click Locate… and choose the folder again.
I changed the recipe, but older images still have the old format
A new recipe applies to images that arrive from then on. To redo the ones already converted, choose Convert Again from the folder's … menu. Existing converted files are skipped, replaced or kept side by side, as set under If a converted file already exists.
Files a colleague adds on a server take a while
On a server, the app finds files added from other computers with a regular rescan, at most five minutes later. Files added from your own Mac, and in Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive or iCloud Drive folders, are picked up right away.
Frequently asked questions
What does Auto Image Batcher actually do?
It watches folders you choose. When an image lands in one, it converts it for you: to WebP, AVIF, JPEG, PNG, HEIC or TIFF, resized and renamed if you like, into a Converted folder or wherever you want. No export dialogs, no drag and drop.
Does it work with Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive and iCloud Drive?
Yes. Point it at a folder those apps sync to your Mac. It waits until a file has stopped changing before it converts it, so images that are still downloading are left alone, and it writes each converted file in one go, so the sync app never uploads half a file.
Does everyone on the team need the app?
No. One Mac running Auto Image Batcher is enough. Save the converted images inside the shared folder and they sync to everyone, like any other file.
Does it work with folders on a server?
Yes, any folder you can open in Finder. Files added from your own Mac are picked up right away; files a colleague adds on the server are found by a regular rescan, within five minutes.
Will it convert the same image twice?
No. It remembers every file it has handled and only converts it again if the file changes, or if you ask with Convert Again. The Converted folder itself is never watched, and when outputs go next to the originals, files already in the target format are skipped.
What about the images already in a folder?
When you add a folder that already has images, it asks whether to convert them too, or only the ones that arrive from now on.
Which formats does it read and write?
It reads JPEG, PNG, HEIC, WebP, AVIF, TIFF, GIF, RAW camera files, PSD, SVG and PDF, and anything else macOS can open as an image. It writes WebP, AVIF, JPEG, PNG, HEIC and TIFF.
What happens to my originals?
They stay where they are, untouched. If you prefer, it can move each original to the Trash once its converted copy is saved, where you can still restore it.
Does it keep colour profiles and metadata?
Colour profiles and orientation are always kept. Other metadata stays too, unless you turn on Remove location and camera info.
Does it upload my images?
No. The app has no internet access at all. Every image is converted on your Mac, and it only sees the folders you give it.
Requirements
